American football is a battle for space, as much as it is a quest for touchdowns. As the EFLI works to bring the game to India, the organisers of the Elite Football League are involved in a similar journey for space, in the minds and hearts of Indian sports fans. Football in this form is a sport of conflict and heavy contact – two characteristics that the EFLI believe will appeal to the younger generation of fans. If the success of the WWE and UFC are any indication, they may have got that calculation fairly right. But introducing a sport in market without any cultural influence is a tall order. It is perhaps the reason why, EFLI has opened up several fronts in their quest for interest and loyalty. Even as the bosses of the league are busy assembling teams from India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka for the 2015 edition of the league, there is plenty of other things that are being driven to take the sport into the people.

PATIALA: A new sport is going to take Punjabis by storm in the coming weeks. American Football - the rugby-like game played in United States - has set foot on Punjab soil from Thursday, at the Punjabi University grounds here. Organized by Association of India Universities (AIU) in collaboration with Elite Football League of India (EFLI) - a professional American Football League body in India - the tournament has 20 universities from all over India taking part in it. Punjab is being represented by four varsities, the Punjabi University (Patiala), Guru Nanak Dev University (Amritsar), Lovely Professional University (Jalandhar) and Chandigarh University, in the tournament. Still in its infancy in India, the sport, which enjoys equal status to basketball and baseball in the US, is finding huge support base in Punjab. "Four-five months back, the EFIL appointed American coaches in 16 different Indian universities. This move roused the interest of youngsters in the game after which we got 20 universities participating in this tournament," Dr. Raj Kumar Sharma, director of sports at the Punjabi University told TOI. He also added that the decision to organize this meet was taken after the AIU gave nod to include American Football in the sports calendar of inter-university games. A team from Delhi, which has been labeled as the "Delhi Defenders" is also taking part in the tournament. Adesh Kumar, the head coach of the team, said, "The game was introduced in India in 2011 and our main aim is to popularize the sport. This tournament will go a long way in achieving what we have been striving for." So, its time to brace up for some high-octane action with players wearing helmets, donning cleats and smacking the power girdles!
The Elite Football League of India (EFLI), American football has just scored a game-winning touchdown by securing an exclusive partnership with leading mobile innovations firm, IntelaText. This is the first time in sports history that a major mobile technologies firm specializing in fan engagement will help launch American football in a burgeoning and booming country. The EFLI is growing exponentially and expected to surpass the NFL in fan engagement in the next few years. Contracted with sports’ premier television channel Ten Sports, the league has doubled in size from 8 teams in Season One to 16 teams in Season Two with an additional 16 expansion teams gearing up for Season Three, totaling 32 teams in all. League owners include three time Super Bowl quarterback and two time MVP, Kurt Warner; award winning actor, Mark Wahlberg; three time Super Bowl champion with the Dallas Cowboys, Michael Irvin and former coach of the Chicago Bears and TV sports commentator, Mike Ditka. “We have more desire for ownership than players to fill the roster. American football is taking off faster than anyone could have imagined,” says Sunday Zeller, Founder and co-CEO of the EFLI.
The EFLI was founded in mid-2011 and publicly announced on August 5, 2011. The aim of the league is to introduce American football to the Indian market and its large consumer base.
